Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, all activist movements went into a state of organizational shock. To date, few have recovered. We are living in a different world than we were on September 10, 2001. Things have changed and will never be the same, especially in the United States of America. Activists foolish enough to think they can pull the same stunts they did prior to the country being put under martial law are welcome to continue and face the consequences. "Rights," these days are merely a formality. Anyone who thinks differently is kidding themselves.

We consider ourselves smarter than most activists, and rather than delude ourselves with false hopes, have decided to do the right thing under today's political climate and go underground. It was an easy decision, since we'd already abandoned the hopeless methods promoted by the dreamers who lead the "mainstream" drug reform movement. GREEN PANTHERS! no longer endorses rallies, harvest festivals, petitions, or letter writing campaigns as acceptable activities to promote marijuana legalization. Our culture does not have the money, motivation, voter numbers or political clout to bring about the freedom we desire. With this in mind, GREEN PANTHERS! ceased publication of our newsletter, stopped giving speeches, organizing rallies and have gone underground.

If you are just now finding out about us, GREEN PANTHERS! got started in 1990 when we realized that the methods being used by other drug reform organizations were making no difference in the way the government was oppressing drug users across the country. We have been on the cutting edge of pot legalization activism ever since. GREEN PANTHERS! was doing civil disobedience while others were just writing letters to politicians pleading for their help. GREEN PANTHERS! was locking down boot camp prisons while other groups collected names on petitions that ended up filling Capitol Hill dumpsters. GREEN PANTHERS! was instrumental in the initiating of Cannabis Buyers Clubs for those with medical needs for marijuana could get their medicine. It didn't take long before we realized that just like the letters and petitions, our direct action and protests were having less and less effect--our enemy was learning to counter our ideas quickly. Buyers' Clubs across the country were being shut down -- activists and patients arrested. Nothing was changing for the better.

In the mid-nineties we came up with the first revolutionary plan in our movement for decades. GREEN PANTHERS! saw the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia break up into smaller countries. We identified early on the clashes of civilizations, the Serbians versus Bosnians, the Israelis versus the Palestinians and other turf battles around the globe. Then, we looked closer to home where we found the Republic of Texas, the Nation of Islam, Hawaiian Nationalists, Atzlan and a host of other movements vying for their own part of the United States. If they could claim a part of the country for their race, religion or nationality, why not the pot smoking counter-culture? Upon contemplation about the best place for us to recommend as a Stoner Homeland, we found that the largest concentration of pot smokers, not to mention the kindest weed in the country, was in Northern California and Oregon. We suggested those pot smokers planning to move consider migrating into that area. When the United States goes the way of the Soviet Union, we would have an embryonic nation where pot would be totally legal and the counter-culture values widely accepted. Even if the country did not break up, we would have large enough majorities to vote in pot smoking mayors, sheriffs, and representatives and pass lenient local drug laws.

We suggested that our people plan to protect themselves, their friends and families as well as their property against any force that would attempt to take them away. To date, GREEN PANTHERS! remain convinced that this is our best hope for drug legalization and a an end to the repression of our culture. In keeping with our own advice, we stand ready to protect ourselves once the U.S. collapses into civil war.

We make no apologies for our decision to go underground. We have come to the realization that the best methods for ending the War on Drugs are those least able to be accomplished by the pot culture in general and the mainstream pot movement in particular. That being said, the true militants within the pot culture have already aligned themselves with us and endorse our methods. It is those who believe they can reform a system hell-bent on wiping them out, who are defenseless and on their own. Our concern today is protecting our own asses and surviving the coming breakup of America. If you wish to attempt to "work through the system" knock yourself out.

While some will say that GREEN PANTHERS! is gone, and no longer a part of the counter-culture struggle for true freedom, they couldn't be more wrong. We have taken the words of Mao to heart and swim like fish through the sea of our people, unrecognized by our enemies, infiltrating every community in the land and waiting patiently until our time is right.
